Chairperson, hon members, on Sunday 14 June the Confederations Cup kicks off in South Africa. Our youth will run onto the field of soccer to compete against champions from all continents of the world. Their counterparts in cricket are in England, mixing it up with the best. The junior Boks are in Japan, where they are doing our country proud by all accounts. The senior Boks are flexing their muscles in anticipation of a royal battle against the visiting British and Irish Lions.
The June 1976 lot faced the might of the state with their bare chests to ensure that we joined the ranks of free nations, to make it possible for their younger brothers and sisters to mix and play with other youth of the world.
We look up to our youth to pass mathematics so that they can fly the modern fleet of aircraft at SAA; help build and maintain the power stations required to ensure our security of electricity supply; and assist the country in shifting to cleaner energy sources.
We look up to them to join their counterparts in Japan, Korea, Finland, Egypt and other countries in mastering the intricacies of biotechnology, so that they may exploit our rich biodiversity to defeat malaria, HIV and tuberculosis. This country is there for them to serve, modernise and bequeath to their own children. Thank you. [Applause.]
