(1) What measures are in place to ensure that different sporting
codes are introduced at schools;
(2) whether any communication and/or interaction exist between his
department and the Department of Basic Education to facilitate
sport as part of the school curriculum; if not, why not; if so,
what measures are in place to monitor the specified

REPLY
1. The National Sport and Recreation Plan directed Sport and
Recreation South Africa to prioritize Sporting Codes for Schools
by year 2012, in order for these codes to be optimally supported
and developed.

The following codes were prioritized: Athletics, Basketball,
Boxing, Chess, Cricket, Football, Gymnastics, Goalball, Hockey,
Netball, Rugby, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and
Volleyball.
2. Post the signing of the MoU in November 2011 between Sport and
Recreation South Africa and Department of Basic Education in
implementing Schools Sport Strategy. The respective Director
Generals established a joint operational structure (Joint
Task National Task Team) which comprises of SRSA and DBE
officials, with a mandate of implementing and monitoring the
implementation of the Schools Sport Strategy.
