PARLIAMENTARY QUESTION ON 208
DATE OF PUBLICATION: 15 MAY 2013
Mr Z Mlenzana (COPE-EC) to ask the Minister of Economic Development:
a. How many jobs have been created since the signing of the Green Economy
Accord on 17 November 2011, (b) what amount was allocated to the Green
Economy Accord in 2012 and (c) how much was spent? CW296E
REPLY
a. The Green Economy Accord was signed in November 2011 and provided a
boost for actions in the private and public sector that supports
activities that have a positive impact on the environment. Based on the
actions monitored by government, it is clear that tens of thousands of
jobs are currently sustained through green economy activities. No special
funding was made available for the Accord itself, but funds for the green
economy actions have been announced by a number of public agencies and
Ministries. Work undertaken to publicise the Green Economy Accord was
financed from the operational budget of EDD.
b. In order to illustrate the range of green economy activities covered by
the Green Economy Accord, we provide the following list of actions and
programmes that public entities are reporting on. This list is not
complete and a number of other activities (eg the production of auto
catalytic convertors and the MyCiti public transport system) are not
included in the figures below. By November this year, we intend to
release a more comprehensive list of green economy actions.
c. Green economy jobs are not measured as a distinct category in the
StatsSA data. Information collected from departments use a range of
different measures and the jobs can refer to full time or part time jobs.
Some of the jobs in construction will be spread over the period from
commencement of a project to conclusion, and does not necessarily refer
the current employment. Data submitted by public agencies are currently
available for the following 58 green economy project.
