DATE OF PUBLICATION OF INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER: 12/10/2012
(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER 30 OF 2012)
Mr S H Plaatjie (COPE-NW) to ask the Minister of Higher Education and
Training:
Whether he has been informed of the lack of financial assistance to
postgraduate students at the University of Johannesburg as a result of
the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) not allocating funds up
to date; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, what are the
relevant details?
CW689E
REPLY:
The Department of Higher Education and Training has made R50 million
available for postgraduate students who require financial assistance to
complete their postgraduate qualifications. The funds are administered as a
conduit fund by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and no
specific allocation was made to individual universities. The University of
Johannesburg has submitted claims to the value of R1 799 925.00 for this
category of funding. NSFAS has approved payment of R696 222.00 with the
balance on the queue for payment authorization.
