Mr D A Worth (DA-FS) to ask the Minister of Water and Environmental
Affairs:
1) How are hunting off-takes decided on for state-owned parks;
2) whether commercial hunting is permitted in state-owned parks; if so,
what are the relevant details; if not,
3) whether the Government has any plans to permit this activity; if not,
what is the position in this regard; if so, what are the relevant
details;
4) (a) how are decisions made with regard to the setting of quotas for
hunting of species listed under the Threatened or Protected Species
(TOPS) are permitted to be hunted in each province?

30. THE MINISTER OF WATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS ANSWERS:
1) They are done by provincial officials dependant on acceptable numbers
as informed by specific management plans.
2) Yes. Only permitted in provincial reserves but no hunting takes place
in national parks.
3) Government is already permitting hunting in provincial reserves as
stated above.
4) The threatened or protected species regulations (TOPS) make provision
for the setting of annual hunting off-take limits for the country and
per province by the South African Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).
