(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO. 01)
Mr V M Manzini (DA-Mpumalanga) to ask the Minister of Health:
(1) Whether, with regard to law suits against his department as a result
of negligence, any mechanisms are in place to ensure that all
professional staff are qualified; if not, why not; if so, (a) what
mechanisms and (b) what are the further relevant details;
(2) whether nurses are supervised; if not, why not; if so, what are the
relevant details?

REPLY:
1) All professional staff have to be registered with the relevant
Statutory Council, and Human Resources departments and managers of
have an obligation to ensure and verify this. Additional requirements
related to continuing professional development will be strengthened as
part of implementation of the Human Resources for Health (HRH)
Strategy.
2) Mechanisms exist for the supervision of nurses as well as all other
professional staff. This happens at many different levels (at Ward and
Unit level in hospitals, through PHC supervisors and through clinical
outreach in primary care services). Â
