(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO. 38)
Mrs E C van Lingen (DA-EC) to ask the Minister of Health:
(1) Whether all (a) clinics and (b) hospitals have a standardised storage
room for (i) drugs and (ii) other related medical material; if not,
(aa) why not and (bb) which hospitals do not have this facility; if
so, what are the relevant details;
(2) whether any plans are in place to supply those (a) clinics and (b)
hospitals with the necessary storage rooms; if not, why not; if so,
what are the relevant details of such plans in each case;
(3) whether there are any norms and standards with regard to such storage
rooms; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, what are
the relevant details?

REPLY:
(1) (a) No;
(b) Most hospitals have standardised storage rooms for (i) drugs and
(ii) other medical related material, although infrastructure
upgrading is needed for some hospitals;
(aa) Revitalising Programme not completed according to
timelines;
(bb) The following hospitals have been identified to be in need
of upgrading to accommodate for storage facilities:
- Gauteng: South Rand, Odi, Jubilee;
- Limpopo: Thabazimbi, Warmbaths, Voortrekker, Messina, St
Ritas, Philadelphia, Mecklenberg, Thabamoopo, Maphutha
Malatje, Dr. N. Phatudi;
- Northern Cape: Frazerburg, Kakamas, Douglas, Victoria-
West.
Some provinces are still assessing facilities and
information can be provided once assessments have been
finalized.
(2) Assessments are being done to determine revitalisation needs of
individual facilities and plans are in the process of being developed
for upgrading including the necessary storage rooms required for (a)
clinics and (b) hospitals. Once the assessments have been finalised
the information can be made available. However, some facilities are in
process of upgrading.
(3) Yes. The norms and standards for storage rooms are contained in the
Good Pharmacy Practice document of the South African Pharmacy Council
