Whether his department has conducted any study regarding the number of
infants who are acquiring HIV/Aids from their mothers who are in the
Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) Programme; if not, why not;
if so, how many infants have acquired HIV/Aids (a) during birth and (b)
through breastfeeding?
CW491E
REPLY:
The Department commissioned the Medical Research Council (MRC) to conduct a
study in 2010. Study found 3.5% of infants were positive between 6-8 weeks
in 2010 compared to 8% in 2008.
a) and (b) The study did not separate the percentage of HIV
transmission in labour and through breastfeeding.
