Mr O de Beer (COPE-WC) to ask the Minister of Basic Education:
1) Whether she has been informed that school children attending a certain
school (De Rust) outside Grabouw have to walk long distances, often in
the rain and in dangerous circumstances to get to school; if not,
what is the position in this regard; if so, what are the relevant
details;
2) Whether there are any plans in place to organize transportation for
these children; if not, why not; if so, what plans?
Reply
1. No formal complaint has been received by the Minister or the MEC
regarding learners who are walking long distance to school in De
Rust. According to the Western Cape Provincial Education
Department, there are four transport schemes transporting a total
of 621 learners in the area, these include learners from De Rust
Futura School.
2. As indicated above, learners in the area and school in question are
currently being transported. There are also plans in place to
increase the number of learners in the existing routes to address
new needs.
