Mr W F Faber (DA-NC) to ask the Minister of Health:
Whether the Eastern Cape Department of Health has appointed any contractors
for the maintenance contracts of standby generators at state hospitals; if
not, (a) why not and (b) what safety measures have been put in place to
prevent power cuts at state hospitals; if so, (i) what budget is available
for these contracts, (ii) which contractors have been appointed at each
state hospital, (iii) from which date, (iv) for what duration and (v) for
what amount?

REPLY:
The Eastern Cape Department of Health did engage a maintenance contractor
for generators with effect from 15 August 2007. This contract was for three
years and lapsed on 14 August 2010. Due to some administrative challenges,
new contracts were not in place since then and finally on 28 October 2010
such contracts were awarded, covering all districts through the Provincial
Department of Roads and Public Works. These contracts are for three years
and the name of the relevant contractors, the value of their associated
contracts and the budgetary allocations for the current financial year are
reflected in the following table:
