Mr W F Faber (DA-NC) to ask the Minister of Sport and Recreation:
(1) Whether any action has been taken against a certain person (details
furnished)? If not; why not? If so; what are the relevant details;
(2) Whether, in respect of sponsors withdrawing from Athletics South
Africa (ASA), he will take any steps to rectify the
(a) Situation and
(b) Financial effect this will have on ASA and athletes? If not; why
not? If so;
(i) What steps and
(ii) What are the further relevant details?
(3) What steps will be taken to ensure that a similar situation, than
that of a certain person (name furnished) does not take place in the
future?

REPLY:
1. SASCOC has suspended the President, Management and Board members of
ASA and appointed an interim board headed by an administrator. The
outcome of the Disciplinary processes of SASCOC and of the IAAF will
determine the final destiny of people concerned.
2. (a) The appointed administrator is meeting with the sponsors in an
attempt to address the matters pertaining to sponsorship. The
Ministry is also assisting to reassure sponsors about the need
to assist on athletes.
(b) (i) SASCOC has authorized an investigation on ASA.
ii) As in 2 (a).
3. It is hoped that the investigation will come up with recommendations.
We are also looking at strengthening our own Legislation.
