Deputy Chair, I hereby move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes that the SA Maritime Safety Authority has installed a sophisticated navigation satellite system for sea safety with a capacity to identify and track vessels up to 1850 kilometres from the South African coastline as well as South African flagged vessels anywhere in the world;
2) further notes that the satellite system will not only be used to combat and prevent sea piracy and to safeguard ships and their cargo as well as to safeguard the South African coastline and territorial waters, but also to prevent and combat pollution of the marine environment and to protect marine resources; and
3) takes this opportunity to congratulate the SA Maritime Safety Authority on such an innovative system that will further strengthen the security of our nation and ensure that South Africa also plays a pivotal role in the fight against piracy.
