[Mrs T M A GASEBONWE (ANC): Speaker, the North West Province has embarked on a TB awareness campaign. Apart from the promising results of fighting TB in the North West province such as examining or checking up that have been continued by the Department of Health in all health institutions in the province, new TB cases have declined from 27 000 to 30 000 in 2010 and in the past three years.
The fight against this disease has brought promising results and better care for patients infected with TB and HIV from 80% in 2008 to 38% in 2010, and treatment results in the province increased from 40,3% to 63%. However, TB is still responsible for seven percent of deaths in the province. This is because of patients who stop taking their medicine prematurely for what is thought to be a treatable disease. This happens a lot in the Bojanala region.
Therefore, the North West department of health has decided to celebrate the commemoration of International TB Day at a village called Tloung near Mahikeng by embarking on a TB awareness campaign. This is to inform citizens about the dangers of the disease and about its treatment. There will be volunteers who will conduct a door-to-door campaign and also visit taxi ranks in all four regions of the province. This confirms the ANC's aim to improve people's state of health. Thank you. [Time expired.] [Applause.]]
