That the House -
1) notes with great sadness the death of renowned South African jazz singer and composer Ms Sathima Bea Benjamin on 20 August 2013, at the age of 76; 2) further notes that Sathima was born in Johannesburg in 1936, spent her childhood in Cape Town and then emigrated to Switzerland with her husband, Abdul Ibrahim, in 1962 from where she toured the world with her husband;
3) recognises Sathima's contribution to the struggle for freedom in South Africa through her music and fundraising initiatives and to advance the mass liberation movement;
4) recalls that Sathima was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in silver in October 2004 by former president Thabo Mbeki in honour and recognition of her "excellent contribution as a jazz artist" in South Africa and internationally, as well as for her contribution "to the struggle against apartheid";
5) further recalls that Sathima was recently awarded the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award;
6) extends its heartfelt condolences to Sathima Bea Benjamin's family, friends and colleagues; and
7) wishes that Sathima Bea Benjamin rest in peace, rus in vrede, robala ka khotso.
