  • Mrs Y N Phosa (ANC) 17 Mar 2015 hansard

Hon House Chairperson, our glorious movement of the people the ANC ... [Interjections.] ... notes with appreciation the launch of the 2015 Apply Now/Khetha Career Guidance Campaign at the University of Johannesburg, UJ, by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The event was held at the Gloria Sekwane Gate of the university, which is named after the parent who lost her life during a stampede at the gate in January 2012. The campaign is aimed at encouraging learners, especially those who are in Grade 12, to take action and apply on time for admission at post- school learning institutions. I am talking about universities, universities of technology and vocational education and training colleges.

The campaign brings together two components - which is the Apply Now and the Khetha Career Guidance and Counselling Campaign - because a learner cannot be in a position to apply early if he or she does not know what to choose or what career path to follow. The ANC believes that the campaign will go a long way in curbing late registrations, walk-ins and long queues, which lead to stampedes.

We urge our Grade 12 learners to heed the call and apply on time for the 2016 academic year. I thank you, House Chairperson. [Applause.]
