REPLY:
1) Yes, the National Commissioner did visit the Pitout family following
the untimely death of Captain Pitout who was killed during the
execution of her duties. The purpose of the visit by the National
Commissioner was to convey on his behalf and the South African Police
Service, condolences to the family and the loved ones.
2) The National Commissionerâs comments in relation to the application
for reinstatement must be read in context with the re-enlistment
policy prescripts with the understanding that all applicants will be
evaluated against a predetermined criteria without guaranteeing any
individual re-enlistment into the Service.
3) According to records kept by the Department, Mr Ian Pitout was
employed by the South African Police Service from 30 June 1992 and
purchased his discharge on 31 March 2008 to pursue another career
opportunity abroad. Mr Pitout did apply for re-enlistment and his
application is under consideration together with all other
applications that were received from former members of the South
African Police Service who applied for re-enlistment. Mr Pitout will
be informed of the National Commissionerâs decision upon completion of
due processes related to the re-enlistment.
