(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER: NO 5 â 2010)
Mr D B Feldman (Cope â Gauteng) asked the Minister of Transport:
Whether his department has any legislation in place regarding daily
timeframes to control the use of national roads by heavy trucks; if
not, when will legislation to such an effect be introduced; if so, why
are trucks permitted to drive at all times on the national roads?
CW127E
THE REPLY:
The Minister of Transport
There is no legislation that bans the movement of heavy vehicles,
except if they are non-compliant to the National Road Traffic Act,
1996 (Act No 93 of 1996).
There is no study that has been done to limit such use, because the
provisions of the National Road Traffic Act are sufficient to regulate
the movement of heavy vehicles.
Through provisions of chapter 9 of the National Road Traffic Act and
Regulations, provisions are made to regulate the movement of heavy
vehicles on the road network through the use of âRoad Traffic Signageâ
by the Roads and Traffic Authorities.
