In the light of the report contained in the National Conventional Arms
Control Committeeâs (NCACC) 2008-09 annual report that category A
conventional arms were exported to Sudan, (a) what (i) was the name of the
chairperson and (ii) were the names of the members of the Scrutiny
Committee in this regard, (b) what was the (i) type, (ii) quantity and
(iii) purpose of exporting conventional weapons and (d) what are the names
of the departments that (i) were requested to make recommendations, (ii)
replied and (iii) did not reply in this regard and (e)(i) where and (ii) to
whom did each department reply to the request for recommendations in this
regard?
REPLY:
a) Representatives of the South African Police Services, the Department
of Trade and Industry, South African Secret Service, Department of
Defence, Department of Foreign Affairs, National Intelligence Agency
and the Inspectorate attended the Scrutiny Committee.
b) The Scrutiny Committee met on the 11 June 2008.
c) (i) The equipment involved in the contracting permit that was
recommended in the June 2008 Scrutiny Committee is Category G
equipment, (iii) and the exported items were for use by the SANDF
Contingent and the African Union Mission deployed in Sudan.
d) (i) The departments that were requested to make recommendations are
the South African Police Services, the Department of Trade and
Industry, South African Secret Service, Department of Defence,
Department of Foreign Affairs, National Intelligence Agency and the
Inspectorate, (ii) all the departments replied.
e) The departments replied at the Scrutiny Committee meeting.
