Houses in Khayelitsha were constructed in a format that resembled a garage, which included a toilet. It was further suggested that houses were not fitted with proper infrastructure, and as a result sewerage systems were blocked. It was further arleged that walls were erected on inadequate foundations. In some instances, beneficiaries were expected to complete incomplete units themselves. The following contractors were involved in the projects: New Core (who later changed to Melon), MK, ASLA and Lewis (who accepted funding for nine units which it did not construct).
