Closely linked with the rationalisation of the areas of jurisdiction of the lower courts is the programme for the redesignation of branch courts as proper full-service courts. Before August 2009, there were 90 branch courts, the largest number being in former black townships and rural areas. Fifteen of these branch courts, in different provinces, have been redesignated and turned into proper self-standing courts, with effect from 15 August 2009.
