Chairperson, I hereby give notice that on the next sitting day of the Council, I shall move:
That the Council -
1) notes with serious concern reports that suggest that the Department of Safety and Security is facing claims for damages amounting to R6,7 billion, while more than R190 million was paid in damages for assaults, shootings and police actions during the 2005-06 and 2009- 10 financial years;
2) further notes that the reports of the massive claims that the state is paying as a result of shootings, beatings, torture, wrongful arrests, harassment and assaults to suspects and individuals come in a week that three protesters were allegedly shot and killed by police during violent protests in KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal this week; and
3) takes this opportunity to call on the Minister of Police to investigate concerns about the sudden surge in cases of police brutality in our country.
