Thank you, Chairperson. I hereby move without notice: That the Council -
1) notes the remarkable success story of five women from the northern rural area of KwaZulu-Natal who jointly started a small vegetable garden on a small piece of hospital ground, which they leased because they had no land of their own, to feed their families;
2) further notes that today they farm about 70ha of communal land and sell 150 tons of their produce a year to Fruit and Veg City and to local vendors and the leftovers they give to children's homes and the poor; 3) notes that the project provides 7 full-time jobs and 50 temporary seasonal jobs;
4) commends the Amajuba municipality for its initiative in promoting economic development and for assisting the women with sprinklers and irrigation equipment, and the department of water affairs that bought a water pump; and
5) echoes that South Africa needs more men and women like these who do not look to the government to feed them and their families but who take ownership and responsibility for their circumstances to do their own thing and at the same time to assist the community. Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
